Townsend commits to Kent State

The Kent State men’s basketball program received a verbal commitment Tuesday evening from class of 2025 wing Jaymen Townsend. Townsend is a 6-6 prospect from Marion, Indiana. Townsend chose the Flashes over offers from Northern Illinois, Valparaiso and NJIT among others. Townsend joins J.D. Tyler (point guard from Chicago) and Landon Vandenwarker (forward from Delaware Hayes HS, Ohio) in the 2025 recruiting class.

Townsend received an offer from the Flashes on July 15 after a conversation with Rob Senderoff.

The scouting report on Townsend is that he is a multidimensional wing that loves contact, thrives in transition, has a relentless motor and attack mentality, with the physical tools to be a very good defender in college. At 6-6, he possesses matchup issues with his size and length and could post a smaller defender or drive it to the rim. His jump shot is capable and will continue to get better with work.

Townsend talked Kent State this week with the Golden Flash Report. “I feel like it’s a great fit for me to develop and grow as a man and a player.”

Townsend, who plans to major in Business at Kent State, talked about what he brings to the basketball court. “I’m bringing toughness, grit, power and finesse, everything.”

Townsend eclipsed the 1,000 point mark at Marion High School in Indiana, just the 18th player in school history in just his junior year. But he will be on the move for his senior year as he prepares for life in the Mid-American Conference and Kent State.

“My senior year I will be attending Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut,” Townsend said. “The number one reason is to be ready to go hard and have a true understanding of what’s expected of the college level also to get that true bump daily. I will get better daily to help my team to win and keep the great tradition going.”

COACHES WIN…AGAIN: The men’s basketball program held their annual Staff vs. Players slow pitch softball game this week at Schoonover Stadium, in a tradition that goes back decades. It was no surprise that the coaches won the annual contest again. Senderoff pitched for the coaches, donning his usual New York Mets jersey.

WINDY TO THE MAC CENTER: Kent State alum and ESPN Sportswriter/NBA Insider Brian Windhorst will visit the MAC Center on Saturday, September 14. Team 109 will work out at the MAC Center at 1:00pm with a Q & A with Windhorst to follow. All Blue and Gold status members of the Blue and Gold Collective will be able to be in attendance.
