The first Friday night of the OHSAA football season is one week from Friday.
Class of 2025 Kent State quarterback commit Nolan Good is gearing up for his senior season with his Avon High School football team. After missing the end of the OHSAA playoffs last year with a broken collarbone injury, Good is back healthy and ready to lead his team. His Eagles are looking to break through and win a state championship in Ohio in Division II in 2024, after several heartbreaking losses in the state semifinal.
Avon plays one of the toughest non-conference schedules in Ohio where Good and his teammates will play great competition. A week from Friday Avon will open the season against Cleveland Saint Ignatius at Cleveland Browns Stadium. The game can be heard live on WEOL/AM930.
It doesn’t get any easier for Good and Avon in the non-league as they host Canton McKinley in week two and defending Division IV State Champion Glenville in week three.
Good’s Head Coach Mike Elder was a guest on the WEOL/AM930 Lorain County Coaches Preview show on Wednesday and spoke about how Good can now focus on his senior year after committing to the Flashes in late May.
“I don’t know that people understand sometimes the stress that the college decision puts on kids. Just going to camps and being evaluated and people wanting to see you throw…for him to put that behind him you can just see there was weight lifted off his shoulders.”
Kenni Burns and his staff have targeted winners in their recruitment of high school players and Good certainly fits that profile as all he and his Avon program have done is win at a high level for a long time in Lorain County and all over Ohio.
“Kent State obviously is all in with him and I’ve had great conversations with them and they know what they’re getting in him and he’s going to do a great job there,” Elder said.
Before Good heads to Portage County to compete for the Flashes in the Mid-American Conference, he’s got some unfinished business with his teammates.
“He’s been able to focus on being a captain of the Avon Eagles, getting his legs back under him, unfortunately his season ended a little bit early last year but he’s excited and he wants to finish this thing and believes we have a chance to win it all and we do too, so we’re excited,” Elder concluded.
