Saint Ignatius High School, Class of 2025 guard Quinn Woidke is one of the top combo guards in Ohio and all of the midwest. The 6-1 reigning state champion was in for a visit at Kent State this past weekend.
“My visit was awesome,” Woidke said Sunday evening. “Everyone who helped out did a great job making me feel welcomed. What interested me in the program is Coach Sendy and the culture at Kent. The resources around you are great.”
We have followed Woidke’s career at Ignatius the last couple years, and had a chance to see him play at Midwest Live in Sandusky in June. Senderoff was at his game against East Lansing High School.
Woidke is a strong guard with a strong upper body, can absorb contact and dish it out. A playmaking combo guard, Woidke can get in the paint and make plays for himself and others and does a good job of playing off two feet. He’s got the ability to finish with either hand and can also step out and shoot the ball. He also has a chance to be a very good defender in college. Kent State would use him in a similar role.
“They plan to use me as being a guard who is tough, can score at all three levels and to be a guard that is going to help them win games.”
Woidke helped lead a very talented St. Ignatius team to a Division one State Championship last year in the state of Ohio, culminating in a victory at the University of Dayton against Centerville. In the state semifinal, Ignatius edged Delaware Hayes, led by KSU commit Landon Vanderwarker. For the season Woidke averaged 15 points, three rebounds and two assists per game. He was second team All-Ohio, first team All District, but most importantly led his team to a 26-3 record and a championship.
In the regionals, Woidke and the Wildcats played at the MAC Center in Kent, defeating Massillon Jackson and Brunswick. Woidke has goals and plans for his upcoming senior season.
“My first goal is always to win a state championship,” Woidke said. “I want to become a better playmaker as I’ll be playing more point this year. I want to become the leader that our team needs.”
Prior to this season, Woidke was the starting quarterback of the tradition rich Wildcat football program and that football mentality is evident when watching compete on the hardwood. “I feel football helped me with the toughness and confidence side of basketball. I’ll never back down from a challenge and I’ll always go right at you.”
Woidke is coached by former KSU player Cameron Joyce, of the legendary Joyce coaching family, with dad the head coach at Saint Vincent Saint Mary and big brother Dru the head coach at Duquesne.
College of Charleston, Duquesne, Miami (OH), Furman and Ohio, are among the many suitors for Woidke.
Rob Senderoff and Kent State like to play with multiple ball handlers and the addition of Woidke in the backcourt could be a great match for years to come for both sides. Woidke would get to play close to home, and play his conference tournament a couple of minutes from where he plays high school ball currently.
